heart in your hand

I drew a heart in your hand.
Studied your curled fingers and your soft even breathing.
I kissed your forehead and then
Tucked you in, turned out the lights, and tiptoed into the evening.

Tonight was much better than I thought it’d be.
It trumps all the nights I come to you in my dreams.
When I slip in your window,
Draw up the covers,
And drown in the waves crashing over our bodies;
The waves that flood the earth and announce to the mortals we are lovers.

Chinese paper lanterns lit your skin.
You closed your eyes, arched your back, and curved your chest up toward the ceiling.
Your hair spilled out over your chin.
My fingers found your creases, pressed your muscles, gently yielding.

At one point you whispered, “What to you do to me?”
I answered by pressing myself deeper.
I lifted my hips
We felt ourselves hover,
Adrift on the current catching hold of our bodies,
Washing out the roadblocks and smashing down walls around us lovers.

Our first time alone in your mini van.
We both said it was sad that we only had a moment to spend.
My trembling fingers found your hand,
Their tips kissed your wrists and gave their word we’d get the chance again.

My body was shaking the whole way home.
The world probably heard my heart thumping.
Your smooth lips and brown eyes
Ripped open spacetime,
Opened up a wormhole and in slipped my body
Drawn into a better world where you and I are walking free as lovers.
