The Bridge on the canal

See the bridge arch over the canal.
Thousand-year-old stories of lovers and martyrs.
Our chapter begins here and now,
As the shuttle trundles up to the moonlit water.

Hand in hand I help you step down.
The cobblestones are slippery but you quickly recover.
We go rubbernecking around.
And count the arches, doorways, and domes we discover.

Fresh off the bus we go grab a slice.
Orange lights flicker like flames on the water,
The city’s dark and the lamplight is nice,
As we trip through the mazes like Venice’s daughter.

Fashion posters cover the facades.
Seagulls perched watching from the naked statues.
They must have thought the two of us were odd.
Chasing each other through the Square and calling, “I got you!”

See the dome arch over our heads.
Beams of light shimmer on the angels’ faces.
“That one looks just like you”, I said.
And you kissed me in another of the world’s beautiful places.

Our journey ends under blankets of rain.
Racing in a boat, our heads level with the water.
From the emerald waves to a gray seat in a train.
Where we watch the floating city grow fainter and smaller.
